News Alert #1– Many General Licensees with fixed nuclear gauges may soon have to submit Specific License Applications, prepare Radiation Safety Plans, and receive Authorized User and Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) training. The proposed amendment to the NRC’s regulations would limit the quantity of certain byproduct material allowed in a generally licensed device to below 1/10 of the IAEA’s Category 3 thresholds; licensees with devices containing byproduct material at or above this limit would be required to obtain a specific license (SL). The proposed amendment would require owners of approximately 1,800 devices, an estimated 1,400 general licensees nationwide, to apply for specific licenses for the devices. News Alert #2 – The NRC has issued an Information Notice to alert fixed gauge Specific and General Licensees about the potential for the failure of shutter closure mechanisms and the requirements for reporting these events to the NRC. NRC fixed gauge licensees are advised that NRC will place additional emphasis during future inspections on licensee performance of required shutter checks, documentation of the checks, and reporting of equipment failures such as those described in this Information Notice. .... read more |
